Medveja is a small coastal settlement beneath Mount Učka, roughly three kilometres south of central Lovran. Its houses climb the steep green slopes above Kvarner, while visitor life gathers around a long cove of pale pebbles and a campsite immediately behind the shore. Local tourism tradition links the name with Medea and the Argonauts, but Medveja’s modern identity is grounded in more tangible features: a mountain stream that carried stone down from Učka, the village’s fishing past and an old path once used to reach gardens and olive groves in Lovranska Draga. Medveja Beach offers an unusual meeting of mountain scenery and a substantial Riviera bathing area, supplemented in summer by refreshment stands and water-based recreation. Above the bay, the road to Kali reaches a traditional restaurant overlooking the gulf, while the coastal highway connects Medveja with Lovran and Mošćenička Draga. Selected Autotrolej 32/32A services call at Medveja, allowing a car-free visit if the current 2026 timetable is checked carefully.
Medveja belongs to Lovran Municipality but looks very different from Lovran’s urban waterfront: a steep valley descends from Učka directly to a broad pebble beach. The former fishing settlement also worked a cultivated hinterland of vineyards, olive groves and gardens, and the old footpath towards Lovranska Draga still expresses that bond between shore and mountain. Today, houses and villas are scattered across the slopes, with a campsite behind the beach rather than a historic promenade like Lovran’s. Tourism storytelling connects the village’s name with the sorceress Medea, pairing the Argonaut legend with the instantly recognisable Medveja cove.

Medveja’s defining natural sight is the cove itself: pale pebbles shaped by the sea, wind and a stream descending from Učka. Behind the shore begins the old Medveja–Lovranska Draga footpath, historically used by villagers travelling to their gardens and olive groves. The settlement has no monumental old town, so its story is read through the meeting of mountain, torrent valley and former fishing beach. Another characteristic view opens from the road climbing towards Kali, looking across Medveja Bay and the Kvarner Gulf, while the seaside campsite occupies the level ground immediately behind the main beach.
Medveja Beach extends for about a kilometre and is covered with distinctive pale pebbles carried into the cove by a stream from Učka’s slopes. Campsite & Holiday Resort Medveja stands directly behind it, closely linking accommodation and swimming. Summer brings refreshment points and recreational services to the shore; the local tourist board specifically highlights an inflatable water park. The northern section also includes a concrete platform, although pebbles define most of the bathing area. As the water may deepen more quickly than on a sandy shallows, children need supervision at the waterline.

Spend the morning on the main beach before summer traffic builds along the coastal road, then take the old path towards Lovranska Draga. The route leaves the cove and climbs through the former landscape of gardens and olive groves, showing how the hinterland supported fishing-era Medveja. After returning, explore the northern beach section, where temporary food and service concessions were designated for the 2026 season. Finish with a climb towards Kali: Konoba Kali stands about 300 metres above Medveja Beach, reached by a turning roughly 100 metres beyond the campsite entrance when travelling towards Mošćenička Draga.
Medveja’s food tradition draws on fish, seafood, olives and figs, ingredients linking the bay with the cultivated slopes beneath Učka. The clearest local dining destination away from the beach is Konoba Kali, in the hamlet above the cove, known for home-style Mediterranean cooking and views across Kvarner. Its uphill turning lies about 100 metres beyond the campsite entrance towards Mošćenička Draga, with the restaurant roughly 300 metres above the beach. Within the Medveja resort, the à la carte Medvejica restaurant provides a more casual alternative serving pasta, pizza and grilled dishes.
The tourist information centre serving Medveja is at Trg slobode 1 in Lovran and can be reached on +385 51 291 740. Services within Medveja itself are concentrated around the beach and campsite, so Lovran is the practical choice for more substantial shopping and errands. Campsite & Holiday Resort Medveja is at Medveja bb, with its reception beside the beach approach. Kiosks and seasonal services can change: the municipal 2026 tender allocated five locations for use from 1 June to 30 September, with a possible extension through the end of October.
Medveja lies on the coastal road between Lovran and Mošćenička Draga. Autotrolej route 32 links Rijeka, Opatija, Lovran and Mošćenička Draga, but only selected departures continue through Medveja. The published 2025/2026 schedule must therefore be read column by column rather than assuming every Lovran service reaches the village. The timetable allows about five minutes between Lovran and Medveja. The bus stop is on the main road, with the beach and campsite reached downhill on foot. Drivers arriving from Rijeka follow the coast through Opatija and Lovran.
The Lovran Tourist Board places Medveja about three kilometres from central Lovran.
