Delnice is not a coastal town but Croatia’s highest urban settlement and a natural gateway to the Gorski kotar mountains. On the western edge of its centre rises Japlenški vrh Forest Park, protected since 1953 and reaching 842 metres, with woodland trails beginning almost among the town streets. King Tomislav Park links the centre with a deer enclosure, a historic ski jump and forests of beech and fir. Petehovac overlooks the opposite side of the basin and serves as a hiking and winter-sports destination. The town’s cultural counterpoints include Rački House, regarded as the oldest house in Delnice, and Popović Mill, an electric mill that began operating in 1925 and retains its original machinery, sieves and leather belts. South of town, Brod na Kupi adds the Zrinski castle and river swimming spots, while Crni Lug provides access to Risnjak National Park. Delnice therefore works best as an active base: a day can begin with a forest walk from the centre and finish beside the Kupa, on Petehovac or among Risnjak’s mountain landscapes.
Altitude, snowy winters and forests that reach into the town centre define Delnice. Japlenški vrh begins just beyond King Tomislav Park, allowing walkers to move quickly from streets into protected beech-and-fir woodland. The old 70-metre ski jump and cross-country routes reveal a long winter-sports tradition, while the historic Lujzijana road recalls the transport corridor linking Gorski kotar with Rijeka and Karlovac. Delnice also functions as the area’s administrative and service hub, with onward routes toward the Kupa Valley, Lokve, Crni Lug and Risnjak.

Popović Mill began operating in 1925 after Josip and Francika Mihelčić, returnees from America, equipped it with machinery brought from Budapest. It worked until 1960 and survives with its historic mechanisms intact. Rački House at Supilova 94 is presented as the oldest house in Delnice and an example of traditional Gorski kotar construction. The Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1825 and 1829. The town’s principal natural landmark, Japlenški vrh, covers about 170 hectares of protected forest and includes a historic ski jump and viewpoints across the Delnice basin.
Delnice has no sea coast; local swimming is centred on the Kupa River around Brod na Kupi. The tourism board specifically highlights Pritiske river beach near Gusti Laz, where small rapids create a natural massaging effect. As the Kupa is a mountain river, its water remains markedly cooler than the Adriatic even in summer, while changing levels and currents affect swimming conditions. The road from Delnice descends toward Brod na Kupi, where a river stop can be combined with canoeing, rafting or a visit to the Zrinski castle.
Start in King Tomislav Park, pass the deer enclosure and climb toward Japlenški vrh; brown signposts lead into the forest and toward viewpoints over Delnice. Back in town, follow Supilova Street to Rački House and Popović Mill at number 76, where the equipment of the 1925 electric mill survives. For a longer walk, take the marked mountain path toward Golubinjak Forest Park. This nine-kilometre route joins two protected landscapes. Finish the day by hiking or driving up toward the Petehovac mountain lodge.
The Visit Delnice tourist office is at Lujzinska cesta 47/1; its official website lists weekday opening hours of 7:00–15:00. Visits to Popović Mill and Rački House should be arranged in advance because neither operates like an all-day conventional museum. Japlenški vrh is accessible on foot by steps rising from the centre or by car from a turn near the Delnice exit toward the Rijeka–Zagreb road. The mountain climate can bring snow and rapid weather changes, so footwear and winter vehicle equipment should match Gorski kotar conditions.
The highest point of Japlenški vrh Forest Park is 842 metres above sea level.
The marked route from Japlenški vrh to Golubinjak Forest Park is approximately nine kilometres long.
Popović electric mill was completed and began operating in 1925.
