Holy Spirit Church

The Church of the Holy Spirit stands in Bale’s historic centre near the main square. Externally, the small 15th-century Gothic building is very restrained, while its main treasure is inside: an extensive cycle of wall paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The frescoes are associated with Master Albert of Constance and combine Central European, Venetian Gothic and early Renaissance influences. Among the most striking scenes are the Last Supper, the Flight into Egypt and the Massacre of the Innocents. Because the interior is so compact, the paintings can be viewed at close range, making the church especially rewarding for visitors interested in medieval painting.
