St Michael’s Fortress occupies the commanding summit above Preko and for centuries overlooked the sea routes of the Zadar archipelago. The stronghold is especially associated with the Venetian period and the 14th-century struggles around Zadar, while the site also preserves traces of earlier use. The summit can be reached by road as well as hiking routes from settlements on Ugljan. The interior is largely ruinous today, but the setting is the main attraction: the plateau opens broad views towards Zadar, the surrounding islets, Dugi Otok and the Kornati. It suits visitors looking for a combination of a short ascent, history and a panoramic viewpoint.
