Žrnovnica is a Split suburb built along the river of the same name, between the slopes of Mosor and Perun and only a few kilometres from the coastal settlements of Stobreč and Podstrana. Its name is associated with millstones once driven by the river; Antoničin Mill in the village centre preserves that connection by producing flour on traditional stone mills. The short river provides a natural itinerary: from the bridges and houses, walkers can head upstream towards the spring beneath Mosor or downstream towards the estuary near Strožanac. Above the settlement, the Perun trails cross a landscape linked to early Slavic mythology and archaeological sites, including a relief of Silvanus at Barbarići and a late-antique residential complex at Polače. Local sacred landmarks include the Church of St Michael and the parish church of the Assumption, whose façade carries the Žrnovnica stone relief. This is not a conventional seaside resort with its own waterfront: swimming means continuing to Strožanac or Podstrana, while Žrnovnica itself offers riverside shade and access to Mosor and Perun. Promet bus 27 links Žrnovnica, Korešnica and Split under the 2026 timetable.
Although Žrnovnica belongs administratively to Split, its identity comes from a river, watermills and the corridor between Mosor and Perun rather than the palaces of the city centre. The millstones once powered by the current survive in the settlement’s name, while Antoničin Mill provides a tangible link with its former milling economy. Perun is more than a nearby hiking hill: its archaeological and mythological landscape includes ritual mounds, a Roman relief of Silvanus at Barbarići and late-antique remains at Polače. Local food also reflects the Žrnovnica valley through river trout, eel and the distinctive Žrnovnica apple.

Central Žrnovnica stands beside a river rather than a developed sea beach, so conventional swimming means descending towards Strožanac and the Podstrana shoreline. The river reaches the sea near Strožanac, where the river landscape gives way to a coastal promenade and swimming areas around Stobreč Bay. A practical day pairs a morning walk past Žrnovnica’s mills with an afternoon swim at Strožanac. The coast is reached by local road or buses serving Žrnovnica, Strožanac and Split, although conditions near the river mouth deserve extra caution after heavy rain and strong river flow.
Start in central Žrnovnica beside the river and pause at Antoničin Mill, where traditional stone millstones explain the settlement’s name more vividly than any signboard. Continue to the Church of St Michael and the parish church façade bearing the relief known as the Žrnovnica Stone. For a longer outing, take the Perun trails above the village, linking places associated with early Slavic tradition, the Polače site and the relief of Silvanus at Barbarići. Cyclists can tackle the 9.7-kilometre climb from Žrnovnica to Gornje Sitno, averaging 5.1 per cent and finishing near the viewpoints of Mosor.
Promet route 27 connects Žrnovnica and Split through Korešnica; the published timetable effective from 15 June 2026 distinguishes weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Selected journeys run via Stobreč, useful when combining the river with the coast. During roadworks in Ulica Ante Starčevića from 9 July 2026, route 27 follows a diversion along Perunova ulica, supported by a minibus between Korešnica, Ulica Hrvatskih velikana and the Žrnovnica terminus. Routes 28 and 29 provide additional links towards Dubrava, Tugare and Split, although temporary traffic arrangements can alter their normal paths.
Antoničin Mill in central Žrnovnica uses traditional stone mills and sells several types of flour ground on site.
