Klis Fortress stretches across the steep rocks of the pass between Kozjak and Mosor, commanding the Klis field and the routes towards Salona and Split. Its fabric contains layers from Illyrian and Roman times through Venetian and Austrian rebuilding. The late Roman fort of Kleisa served as an outpost for Salona, while from the fifteenth century Klis became a frontier stronghold between the Ottoman Empire, the Venetian Republic and the Habsburg Monarchy. Its long defence is closely associated with the Klis Uskoks and Petar Kružić. Visitors can explore three separately entered defensive sections, the Providur’s Residence, Bembo Bastion and St Vitus Church, formerly an Ottoman mosque.
