The Walls of Ston were built after the Republic of Dubrovnik acquired Ston and Pelješac in 1333 and developed the town as the centre of its Ston district. Running for about 5.5 kilometres, the system links Ston with Mali Ston across the hilly isthmus. Beyond the main curtain wall, it includes the fortresses of Veliki Kaštio, Koruna and Podzvizd, 41 towers, seven bastions and outer defensive works. The fortifications protected an area crucial to the Republic because of salt production in Ston Field. Visitors can walk the walls with an admission ticket; climbs and stone steps open views over Ston, its saltworks, the channel and surrounding hills.
