The Church of St Michael stands on a small hill northeast of Ston and ranks among the region’s most valuable surviving early Croatian sacred buildings. This diminutive southern Dalmatian domed church measures only 4.38 by 2.51 metres and dates from the 11th or 12th century. Its interior was once entirely painted, but warfare, earthquakes and exposure to the elements destroyed much of the decoration. Two frescoes remain intact: one shows a ruler or donor holding a model of the church, and the other depicts St George. Most of its richly carved stone furnishings are kept in Ston’s Lapidarium. It rewards visitors exploring Pelješac’s early medieval art alongside Ston’s fortifications.
