Established on 11 November 1960, Mljet National Park covers almost 5,300 hectares in the western part of the island, including a 500-metre coastal marine belt, islets and reefs. Its focal points are the Small and Great Lakes, seawater-filled bays connected to the open Adriatic by channels. The islet of St Mary in the Great Lake holds a Benedictine monastery, the park’s most visited cultural landmark. Walking trails link the lakes with Polače and Pomena, while cycling and canoeing offer other ways to explore. It suits visitors seeking quiet nature, swimming and heritage in one compact landscape.
