Vinica is a settlement and municipal centre about 15 kilometres west of Varaždin, positioned between the Drava plain and vineyard-covered hills rising towards Haloze. Medieval records identify it early, with sources from the first half of the 14th century mentioning castrum Vinica, today’s ruined castle on Vinica Breg. The remains stand roughly 1.5 kilometres west of the centre and recall the fortress’s former role in defending access to Varaždin and the Varaždin plain. The best-known natural site lies in nearby Marčan: Arboretum Opeka is protected as a monument of park architecture, combining a designed landscape with sessile-oak and sweet-chestnut woodland. A walking route can link the pillory on Trg Matije Gupca, the traditional house, Opeka, Betlehem Cave and the old castle; these were also the main points on the seventh Vinica Hike in 2026. Road links connect Vinica with Varaždin, while the municipality lists bus routes via Greda and Donje Vratno. A car or bicycle is most practical for the dispersed sites, and sturdy footwear is advisable for the climb towards the castle and cave.
Vinica lies about 15 kilometres west of Varaždin where the Varaždin plain gives way to vineyard-covered hills leading towards Haloze. The settlement’s continuity is reflected in historical variants of the name Vinica, while the parish of St Mark appears in a 1334 list of the Zagreb Diocese. On Vinica Breg stand the ruins of a medieval castle that once served as the estate’s administrative and defensive centre. In Marčan, Arboretum Opeka adds another defining layer: a protected park beside the castle, divided between a designed landscape and woodland of sessile oak and sweet chestnut. Vinica is therefore explored not merely as a central village but as a sequence of connected sites including the pillory, traditional house, Opeka, caves, a waterfall and the old castle on the surrounding hills.

Begin at the pillory on Trg Matije Gupca, then continue through Vinica towards the traditional house in Marčan and Arboretum Opeka. The grounds combine a historically designed park with natural sessile-oak and sweet-chestnut woodland, while the restored Opeka Castle stands beside them. The more active section leads to Betlehem Cave and the old Vinica castle on Vinica Breg, where the ruins overlook the plain once guarded by the fortress. This order follows an established local route: on 29 August 2026, the seventh Vinica Hike connected the pillory, traditional house, Opeka, the cave and the castle. Allow several hours for the complete circuit and wear footwear suitable for hilly, occasionally uneven ground.
Vinica is about 15 kilometres west of Varaždin by road, while the wider destination management plan gives a distance of roughly 17 kilometres and a driving time of about 24 minutes, depending on the chosen starting point and route. The municipal website lists Vinica–Greda–Varaždin and Vinica–Donje Vratno–Varaždin bus corridors; its displayed timetable dates from 2022, so a specific journey requires current confirmation from the operator. A car is more convenient for reaching Arboretum Opeka in Marčan, the old castle on Vinica Breg and the area’s other dispersed sites. Cycling connects the plain with the vineyard hills, though the climbs towards the castle and caves demand reasonable fitness. The nearest major bus and railway hub is in Varaždin.
