Legrad stands on the right bank of the Drava near its confluence with the Mura, about 15 kilometres north of Koprivnica. Its position between two major rivers shapes both the landscape and an unusual history: after the Drava changed course, the settlement found itself on the Podravina side, although it remained part of Hungary’s Zala County until 1918. Immediately beside Legrad lies the Veliki Pažut special ornithological reserve, encompassing the Mura’s newer confluence with the Drava, willow and poplar woodland and river islands. The former confluence near Halasz Csarda has a birdwatching structure and an interpretive trail, while Lake Šoderica has developed into the municipality’s principal swimming and recreation area. Within Legrad, the Late Baroque Holy Trinity Church, completed in 1784, stands near a group of eighteenth-century devotional columns. The settlement was once a Zrinski frontier fortress, a privileged market town and a centre for boatmen’s, shoemakers’, weavers’ and millers’ guilds. A well-planned visit connects this mercantile history with cycling, birdwatching and a walk beside the meeting of the two rivers.
Legrad is a Drava-side village whose identity was permanently reshaped when the river cut through a northern meander in 1710, leaving what had been part of Međimurje on the right bank in Podravina. Before that shift, it was a forward Zrinski stronghold at the Mura–Drava confluence. Nikola Šubić Zrinski began expanding the fortification, and Juraj IV Zrinski completed it between 1567 and 1572. Within the historic Međimurje frontier, the fortress guarded the approaches against Ottoman raids and became the seat of the Legrad Military District in the late 16th century.

Begin the morning at Holy Trinity Church and the nearby eighteenth-century devotional columns, the clearest introduction to Baroque Legrad. Continue to the former Mura–Drava confluence near Halasz Csarda, where visitors find an observation structure, the “School by the River” and interpretation panels along an educational trail. To experience the floodplain woodland, proceed towards the edge of the Veliki Pažut reserve while keeping to marked approaches that protect its sensitive river habitats. Spend the afternoon at Lake Šoderica, whose visitor-oriented section lies within Legrad Municipality, while gravel extraction is concentrated on the Drnje side. For cyclists, Legrad, the old confluence and Šoderica form a natural sequence within the Podravina section of the Drava Route.
Legrad has no passenger railway station, so public-transport access is most practical by bus from Koprivnica. The county’s 2024/25 network listed a 32-kilometre Koprivnica–Legrad service, leaving Legrad at 6:55 on weekdays and Saturdays and again at 14:00 on weekdays. In September 2026, the municipality also introduced a trial on-demand link to Koprivnica, including access to the hospital and the Croatian Health Insurance Fund office. A car or bicycle is more useful for combining Šoderica, Halasz Csarda and the separate approaches to Veliki Pažut. Road visitors should note that Legrad itself is about 15 kilometres north of Koprivnica, while the local bus route covers a longer distance because it serves intermediate settlements.
The newer confluence lies within the Veliki Pažut reserve beside Legrad, while the former confluence is the visitor site near Halasz Csarda.
The northern, visitor-oriented part of Šoderica belongs to Legrad Municipality, while the remainder lies in Drnje Municipality.
Yes. The county network includes a Legrad–Koprivnica bus, and the municipality also trialled an on-demand service in September 2026.
