The Co-Cathedral of St Peter and Paul was erected in the late 19th century on the site of an older Baroque parish church, following an initiative by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Construction to plans by German architect Franz Langenberg began in 1894, and the exterior was completed in 1898. Red brick, a soaring tower, a three-aisled basilican plan and ribbed vaults give the building its strongly Neo-Gothic character. The interior contains elaborate altars, stained glass and later wall paintings. Standing in the centre of Osijek’s Upper Town, it is easy to combine with a walk along Županijska Street and the nearby central squares.
