About
Samobor Castle stands above the town as the ruin of a fortress that, according to the city’s information, was commissioned by the Bohemian king Ottokar in 1268, probably on the site of an older structure. Over the centuries it was extended and owned by rulers and noble families including the Counts of Celje, the Frankopans, the Erdődys and the Montecuccolis. The town of Samobor purchased the already abandoned castle in 1902 and retained it as a visitor attraction. Today, visitors approach remains of walls and towers; entry into the ruins is at one’s own risk. The site is protected cultural property, listed as Z-3834.
