About this place

Sveti Petar Orehovec lies on the slopes of Kalnik, 13 kilometres north-west of Križevci in the western part of Koprivnica-Križevci County. Standing at 193 metres above sea level, the village is the administrative centre of a broad rural municipality marked by fields, vineyards, traditional houses and wine-cellar cottages. The parish Church of St Peter the Apostle rises prominently in the village centre. Its parish appears in records from 1334, while the present late-Baroque building was constructed between 1771 and 1779 over an earlier church; a Gothic portal and part of the old façade wall survive. To understand the wider area, continue beyond the village towards Hižanovec. There, Obreške kleti forms a distinctive vineyard zone lined with traditional Prigorje cellar buildings, identified by the municipal spatial plan as the municipality’s best-known ethnological wine-growing ensemble. Sveti Petar Orehovec stands on the D22 state-road corridor between Novi Marof, Gornja Rijeka and Križevci, making it a natural stop on a drive through the Kalnik foothills.

Sveti Petar Orehovec belongs to the Kalnik foothills, where the mountain’s slopes gradually descend towards the agricultural country around Križevci. The village is recognised by the Church of St Peter the Apostle, whose massive bell tower can be seen from different parts of the surrounding landscape. The present church was built between 1771 and 1779, but its Gothic portal preserves evidence of an earlier building and of a parish recorded as early as 1334. The municipality extends far beyond its administrative centre, encompassing numerous small settlements, vineyard slopes and traditional cellar cottages, with the Obreške kleti ensemble near Hižanovec standing out among them.

Things to do

Begin in the centre of Sveti Petar Orehovec at the parish Church of St Peter the Apostle. From its elevated position, observe the bell tower dominating the Kalnik foothills and look for the Gothic portal retained from the earlier church when the late-Baroque building was erected in 1771–1779. Continue by road towards Hižanovec and Obreške kleti, where rows of traditional cellar cottages merge with vineyards and the rolling cultural landscape. The area works best as a short drive punctuated by walks beside the cellar buildings, rather than as a visit confined to the village centre. Returning towards Križevci on the D22 reveals the fields and dispersed settlements of the Orehovec municipality.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Sveti Petar Orehovec is 13 kilometres north-west of Križevci, and the D22 state road crosses the municipality on the Novi Marof–Gornja Rijeka–Križevci corridor. This road provides the simplest approach by car, whether arriving from Križevci or from the western side of the Kalnik foothills. A vehicle is also useful for continuing to Hižanovec and Obreške kleti, since the vineyard ensembles are dispersed beyond the municipal centre. Published local bus schedules chiefly concern school transport, so visitors should not assume a frequent sightseeing-friendly service. Rail travel requires a transfer to road transport from a larger nearby centre rather than arrival directly beside the village landmarks.
