About
Gvozdansko stands on the left bank of the Žirovac River, about 20 kilometres northwest of Dvor and below Zrinska gora. The fortified town was built on Zrinski lands in the second half of the 15th century and was first recorded in 1488. Its castle is mentioned in 1509, in an area associated with mining: Nikola IV Zrinski operated a silver mine and mint here in the 16th century. Gvozdansko was under Ottoman rule from 1578 to 1635, then abandoned, and from 1654 until the end of the 18th century served as a frontier fortification of the Military Frontier. Visitors can now make out sections of the walls, a round defensive tower and the palace remains.
