Rugvica
About this place
Rugvica is a Sava-side settlement and municipal centre on the eastern edge of the Zagreb metropolitan area, positioned between Zagreb, Dugo Selo, Ivanić-Grad and the river. The A3 motorway exit and Posavska Street give it a strong transport function, but its older identity is most visible beside the Sava embankments and in the neighbouring villages. Municipal records link Rugvica with former estates of the Zagreb cathedral chapter, while nearby Savski Nart parish appears in written records in 1334. A compact visit can begin in Rugvica, continue to the embankment and then follow the river corridor south through Preseka to Oborovo. Preseka retains a distinctive semicircular arrangement of houses and side streets around the poloj, a broad green once used as communal pasture. Oborovo adds the Church of Saints George and James, a memorial park recalling the battle of 29 March 1944, and the working ferry that crosses the Sava towards Orle. Together, the motorway gateway, Posavina villages and surviving river crossing make Rugvica an unusual short excursion from Zagreb.
Rugvica belongs to the flat Sava floodplain of Posavina, with the river forming the municipality’s western boundary towards Orle. The settlement now contains the municipal administration, primary school and pharmacy, while the wider area’s documentary history reaches back to estates of the Zagreb cathedral chapter and Savski Nart parish, recorded in 1334. Flood risk has also shaped local life: a new embankment was built along much of the riverbank in the 1980s, together with a high-water control structure at Prevlaka. Rugvica’s identity consequently combines proximity to Zagreb and the A3 motorway with the traditions of Sava-side villages and a river landscape structured by embankments, communal greens and the Oborovo ferry crossing.

Things to do
Set out from Rugvica towards the Sava embankment to see the level river landscape defining the municipality’s western edge. Continue through Preseka, where houses and side streets form a semicircular pattern beside the main road, facing a broad green known as the poloj and its fire station. Oborovo is the next stop: visit the Church of Saints George and James and the memorial park recalling the battle fought here on 29 March 1944. Finish at the Oborovo ferry, the only local Sava crossing on the wider stretch between Zagreb’s bypass and Sisak. The ferry directly links the municipalities of Rugvica and Orle and preserves a form of river transport now rare around Zagreb.

Practical information
Getting there and around
By car, Rugvica is most easily reached from the Rugvica interchange on the A3 motorway, followed by one of the routes along Posavska Street through the municipality. Local roads lead from the settlement towards Savski Nart and Dugo Selo, east to Ježevo, and south through Preseka to Oborovo and Prevlaka. The municipality identifies Čazmatrans as the bus operator serving its territory, although departures should be checked for the intended travel date. At Oborovo, a ferry crosses the Sava towards Orle; a Zagreb County transport study describes it as the only local crossing on the long river section downstream of Zagreb’s bypass. A car remains the practical choice for combining several Rugvica-area villages in one visit.
