Podcrkavlje
About this place
Podcrkavlje is a Slavonian village and municipal centre on the slopes of Dilj, five kilometres north of Slavonski Brod. At an elevation of 133 metres, vineyards and orchards meet stream-cut valleys, creating an unexpectedly varied landscape just beyond the city plain. The village focal point is the parish church of St John the Apostle and Evangelist, while the wider municipality preserves medieval churches dedicated to St Benedict in Oriovčić, St Stephen in Glogovica and St Peter in Brodski Zdenci. Conservation and archaeological research dates these compact, single-nave buildings from the second half of the 13th to the end of the 15th century. Farther north, the Pljuskara stream has carved a small canyon with three waterfalls and a cave whose ceiling contains fossils from the age of the Pannonian Sea. In 2026 the municipality acquired ten conventional and ten electric bicycles for a planned day-hire network covering hill tracks, forest roads and nearby villages. Podcrkavlje therefore works particularly well as a compact outing combining medieval churches, a ride through the Dilj foothills and time in neighbouring Slavonski Brod.
Podcrkavlje’s setting between the Slavonski Brod plain and the Dilj foothills shapes its identity: the village stands at 133 metres, with orchards, vineyards and woodland tracks unfolding to the north. Its municipality includes a chain of small settlements such as Glogovica, Donji and Gornji Slatinik, Brodski Zdenci, Oriovčić and Rastušje. Religious heritage gives the area unusual depth, as the churches of St Benedict, St Stephen and St Peter preserve evidence of medieval settlement beneath Dilj. Rastušje was the birthplace of poet Dragutin Tadijanović, whose native Slavonian landscape remained a defining presence in his work. Rather than feeling like a conventional suburb, Podcrkavlje marks the point where Slavonski Brod gives way to the hillier, historically layered countryside of Dilj.

Things to do
From Podcrkavlje, head towards Lake Petnja and the wooded Pljuskara canyon, carved by the stream of the same name. The Dilj gora mountaineering society maintains a circular route linking the Đuro Pilar mountain lodge, Pljuskara shelter and Lake Petnja, turning the outing into a full-day walk on the Dilj foothills. Continue with a cultural circuit through Podcrkavlje municipality: the Gothic Church of St Stephen stands in Glogovica cemetery, while the Church of St Peter occupies the cemetery at Brodski Zdenci. Both date from the 15th century and are protected heritage sites. In 2026 the municipality acquired ten conventional and ten electric bicycles for a planned daily-rental system serving its hill trails and forest tracks.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Podcrkavlje lies about five kilometres north of Slavonski Brod, making a car the simplest option both for arrival and for exploring the scattered villages below Dilj. The road leaves the city through Podvinje and reaches the municipal centre before local branches continue towards Glogovica, the two Slatinik villages, Brodski Zdenci, Oriovčić and Dubovik. A published 2026 school timetable links Podcrkavlje with Tomica, Kindrovo, Grabarje, Oriovčić, Dubovik, Gornji Slatinik, Brodski Zdenci, Donji Slatinik and Glogovica, but this pupil service should not be treated as a visitor bus network. Travellers arriving by train or intercity coach will find Slavonski Brod the practical gateway and should arrange the final leg by road.
