About this place

Pleternica stands where the Londža flows into the Orljava, 12 kilometres southeast of Požega, on the Našice–Batrina railway. Written sources first mention the settlement as Sveti Nikola in 1270, while the name Pleternica appears in 1427. A visit now centres naturally on two modern interpretation venues. The Bećarac Museum on Trg bećarca explores the witty sung tradition through multimedia exhibits, while Terra Panonica occupies the former cinema and interprets the fossils, plants and animals of the ancient Pannonian Sea. Beside the Orljava stands a small hydroelectric plant, and the Starac and Dr Andrija Štampar educational trails add nature and local-history themes to a walk through town. Pleternica’s Shrine of Our Lady of Tears becomes particularly busy in late August; on 31 August 2026, the city introduced special traffic arrangements for pilgrims. For a local meal, Restoran Klas holds the Flavours of Croatian Tradition designation, while the tourist board lists several additional restaurants, tasting rooms and cafés. Pleternica has both a railway station and bus facilities close to Trg bećarca.

Pleternica is shaped by two rivers and by its position on the southeastern edge of the Požega Basin: the Londža joins the Orljava here, while the Našice–Batrina railway passes through town. The medieval settlement was recorded as Sveti Nikola in 1270 and under its present name in 1427; during Ottoman rule, Pleternik served as the seat of the Gnojnica nahiye. The modern city has built its visitor identity around bećarac singing, the Shrine of Our Lady of Tears and interpretation of Pannonian natural history. Trg bećarca and its museum form the cultural focus, while Terra Panonica in the former cinema links Pleternica to the geological past of Papuk, Psunj and Krndija. The Orljava cascade and small hydroelectric plant provide the centre with a distinctive waterside landmark.

Things to see

The Bećarac Museum occupies about 1,400 square metres on Trg bećarca, with spaces for temporary exhibitions, a projection room, the Bećarac Calendar section and a Small House of Graševina. Terra Panonica, housed in the former town cinema, interprets the natural heritage of Požega-Slavonia County and uses virtual reality to place visitors in the Pannonian Sea alongside a whale and shark. The parish church of St Nicholas was built in 1967, continuing the settlement’s association with the saint whose name it bore in the 1270 record. Beside the Orljava is a small hydroelectric plant, while Pleternica’s visitor offer also highlights the Shrine of Our Lady of Tears, Trg bećarca, the Road of Roses and Wine and two educational trails.

Things to do

Begin at Terra Panonica, where virtual reality and a permanent exhibition reconstruct the Pannonian Sea of roughly 24 million years ago. From Trg Zrinskog i Frankopana, walk to Trg bećarca and allow ample time for the interactive Bećarac Museum, arranged across the purpose-built complex’s ground and underground levels. Continue through the centre towards the Orljava cascade and small hydroelectric plant, then choose either the Starac Educational Trail or the Dr Andrija Štampar trail. Leave the Shrine of Our Lady of Tears for a quieter conclusion, except on 31 August when Pleternica receives large numbers of pilgrims. With advance booking, Terra Panonica also combines its centre visit with a ride on the city’s tourist road train.

Food and drink

Restoran Klas is Pleternica’s best-documented address for Slavonian cooking because it holds the Flavours of Croatian Tradition designation. During the 2021 Flavours festival it served dishes including pork-season soup, smoked pork knuckle with ribs, sauerkraut and potatoes, and the local cake bazlamača; these examples indicate its regional style rather than a permanent menu. The tourist board’s current food-and-wine listings also include Pizzeria Ljuba, Pizza & Grill Bar Aurea, Promenada pastry shop, Etno kuća Bello and tasting rooms run by OPG Pilaš and Markota winery. The tasting venues provide a direct introduction to the Pleternica wine area, but visits should be arranged with the hosts beforehand.

Practical information

Practical information

The Pleternica Tourist Board operates at Trg hrvatskih branitelja 1 and publishes local contacts, events and listings of attractions and food venues. The Bećarac Museum is at Trg bećarca 1; under its published 2026 schedule it closes on Mondays, opens in the morning on weekdays and in the afternoon at weekends, with final admission one hour before closing. Terra Panonica opens from Tuesday to Sunday, but a combined centre visit and tourist road-train ride requires advance booking. Accommodation, traffic and parking need earlier planning in late August because of the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Tears, especially on 31 August when special traffic controls are introduced.

Parking

The verified visitor sources do not publish a regular municipal parking tariff, but special arrangements are documented for Pleternica’s largest annual influx. On 31 August 2026, for the feast of Our Lady of Tears, the city marked temporary parking areas and closed the road towards the hill and shrine to all vehicles except emergency and security services. Pilgrimage coaches were directed to Trg bećarca and parked opposite it, between the sports grounds and the Orljava. Visitors arriving on that date should follow temporary signs and marshal instructions, keep access routes clear and expect to continue to the shrine on foot.

Getting there and around

Pleternica has a railway station on the Našice–Batrina line, with regional services towards Požega and other settlements. HŽ Passenger Transport publishes the 2025/26 timetable valid until 12 December 2026, but engineering works can bring amendments and rail-replacement buses, so check live travel notices before departure. The city lies 12 kilometres southeast of Požega and forms a natural road link between the Požega Basin and the route towards Slavonski Brod. The bus stop is in the central area opposite Trg bećarca, while Pleternica’s tourist road train provides local sightseeing when booked in advance through Terra Panonica.
