Petrinja
About this place
Petrinja is a town on the Kupa and Petrinjčica rivers whose visitor identity after the 2020 earthquake is closely tied to the restoration of its historic centre, but also to parks, rivers and Banovina excursion routes. At its heart is Strossmayer Promenade, a park shaped from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with Illyrian lime trees from the period of French rule, a music pavilion and a 1914 fountain. The parish Church of St Lawrence, the town’s patron saint, remains a key landmark and was rebuilt after being destroyed in the Homeland War. Beyond the urban heritage, the Kupa riverside bathing area and cycling routes toward Hrastovica, Sisak and nearby villages give Petrinja a strong recreational character. For 2026, the tourist board lists current events including Lovrenčevo and the Chestnut Festival. Dining options include venues specialising in river fish and regional dishes, while wider excursions connect the town with Gora, Hrastovica and the Banovina landscape.
Petrinja developed beside the Kupa and Petrinjčica rivers, and its identity today combines the historic centre, Strossmayer Promenade, a pottery tradition and strong ties to the Banovina region. The December 2020 earthquake heavily damaged the centre, making the restoration of cultural monuments and public buildings an important part of the town’s current landscape. Croatia’s Ministry of Culture records extensive reconstruction work in Petrinja, including historic houses, religious buildings and public institutions. At the same time, the visitor experience extends well beyond restoration sites: the rivers, park, walking routes and surrounding villages provide plenty to explore outside the immediate centre.
Things to see
Strossmayer Promenade is one of Petrinja’s defining ensembles. The park began taking shape in the late 18th century and contains Illyrian lime trees from the period of French rule, an 1891 weather column, an 1892 music pavilion and a fountain with bronze figures from 1914. The parish Church of St Lawrence dominates the park; the original 1780 church was destroyed during the Homeland War and later rebuilt in its original form. Another major landmark is the 1936 monument to Stjepan Radić, created by sculptor Mila Vod.

Things to do
For a first visit, start at Strossmayer Promenade, where old Illyrian lime trees, the music pavilion and the town fountain can be seen in one compact space. Continue through the historic centre toward the Stjepan Radić monument and sites included in the tourist board’s cultural routes. In summer, finish at the Kupa riverside bathing area. For a more active visit, the tourist board describes several paved cycling routes, including the 28-kilometre “Along the Rivers” route toward Sisak and the 41.5-kilometre “Green Valley” route toward Hrastovica.
Food and drink
The Petrinja Tourist Board maintains a current dining guide with a range of named venues. Restaurant Štuka on A. Mihanovića Street highlights river fish and Croatian dishes, while the list also includes Mlinski kamen in Brest Pokupski, Magazinska klet, Pizzeria Klobuk, Pablo’s and other establishments in and around town. An interesting feature for visitors is that dining is not concentrated only in the centre: several venues lie along excursion routes toward the Kupa and Banovina villages. Opening hours should be checked shortly before visiting because they can change.

Practical information
Practical information
The Petrinja Tourist Board publishes current events, town maps and themed routes on its official website. For 2026, highlighted events include Lovrenčevo on 10 August and the Chestnut Festival on 17–18 October around the Matija Filjak mountain lodge. Because post-earthquake reconstruction continues to affect parts of the historic centre, access to individual buildings can change, so current tourist-board or city information is useful before visiting heritage sites. Spring to early autumn is the most practical period for recreation along the Kupa and for cycling routes.
Parking
Reconstruction work and the temporary bus stop affect parking capacity in central Petrinja: several spaces on Dr Franjo Tuđman Square were removed when the stop beside the city park was installed. The City identified replacement areas beside the market, next to the new First Primary School on the site of a demolished apartment building, and at the former political-parties building. Temporary traffic arrangements remain in force during 2026: Gajeva Street is two-way, Kačićeva is one-way towards Turkulinova, and part of Turkulinova operates in both directions. Visitors are therefore better served by leaving the car at one of the identified edge-of-centre locations and continuing on foot.
Getting there and around
Čazmatrans services from its Petrinja base at 1 Drenačka Street connect the town with Sisak, Zagreb, Glina, Topusko and Hrvatska Kostajnica. The timetable valid from 1 September 2025 to 30 June 2026 included direct weekday departures to Zagreb via Brest as well as services travelling through Sisak; later journeys require the operator’s current schedule. A temporary bus stop for services towards Sisak stands on Dr Franjo Tuđman Square beside the city park. During 2026, traffic travelling from Glina towards Hrvatska Kostajnica follows a diversion via Gajeva, Kačićeva and Turkulinova streets and Stjepan Radić Square.
