About
St Martin the Hermit Chapel stands on rocky ground in Podsused, north-east of the Susedgrad hill. It is first mentioned in 1209, though its origins are thought to reach back to the 10th century. It belonged to the Cistercians from 1287 to 1345. Tradition links it to Martin the Hermit, who was said to have lived in two caves beside the chapel; the caves collapsed after work at a nearby quarry in the late 19th century. The chapel was restored to designs by Hektor Eckhel in 1899, then restored again and protected as a cultural asset in 2008. It offers visitors a quiet historic pause close to Susedgrad.
