About this place

Maruševec is a village and municipal centre at an elevation of 224 metres, about 12 kilometres south-west of Varaždin. Two protected landmarks shape its appearance: Maruševec Castle within its green park and the parish Church of St George the Martyr. The church is associated with the year 1492 and underwent repeated alterations; a major renovation in 1913 even changed the floor level inside its nave. The castle developed in several stages. A masonry stronghold replaced an earlier noble residence in the 16th century, additions followed in the 17th, and Count Schlippenbach gave the building its conspicuous tower and Romantic appearance during the 19th century. Its former owners assembled collections of European paintings, including Oskar Pongratz’s flower pictures, some of which entered the museum in Varaždin. Several mature conifers and deciduous trees survive in the castle grounds, now protected as a horticultural monument. Maruševec is consequently a compact but layered destination, joining aristocratic history and architecture with the gently cultivated landscape of northern Croatia.

Maruševec is not arranged as a conventional visitor centre with a string of attractions; its identity rests on a castle, a parish church and the hilly countryside between Varaždin and the Croatian Zagorje. The castle evolved from the Vragović family’s noble seat, while its present silhouette and tall tower resulted from Count Schlippenbach’s 19th-century remodelling. The nearby Church of St George contains the Vragović family vault and memorial slabs connected with the Patačić and Pasztory families. Although agrarian reform greatly altered the castle grounds, several centuries-old trees remain, recalling an estate once furnished with a lake, fountain and collections of exotic conifers.

Things to do

Start in the centre of Maruševec at the Church of St George the Martyr, whose interior preserves aristocratic memorials linked to the Vragović, Patačić and Pasztory families. Continue to Maruševec Castle and observe how its substantial older core meets the large tower added during the 19th-century transformation. A walk around the park reveals surviving mature trees, meadows and traces of a once carefully designed estate; view the residence from outside and respect any access restrictions on the property. To extend the historical thread, continue roughly 12 kilometres to Varaždin, where the city museum holds paintings originating from collections once kept at Maruševec Castle.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Maruševec lies about 12 kilometres south-west of Varaždin, making that city the nearest major transport starting point for a visit. A car conveniently links the Church of St George, the castle and the municipality’s surrounding settlements, while the central Maruševec landmarks can be covered on foot. As the castle occupies a green estate rather than a dense urban setting, the final approach should follow local roads and any designated access points. Travellers relying on public transport should check current regional bus connections from Varaždin before departure, since Maruševec has neither an urban transit network nor a railway station beside the castle.
