Kotlina, Kneževi Vinogradi
About this place
Kotlina occupies a vineyard-ringed valley in the Baranja municipality of Kneževi Vinogradi, where orchards, vines and arable fields still shape the village landscape. Its four streets—Glavna, Doža Đerđa, Petefi Šandora and Planina—run between farmsteads and cultivated slopes, with three smaller valleys opening at the settlement’s western end. Kotlina’s defining landmark is the protected Reformed Christian church complex, raised above Glavna Street on a prominent plateau. The early-19th-century church, an 1853 parsonage and an agricultural building dated 1867 form an unusually complete ensemble of Baranja’s Reformed heritage. The village also contains the protected Kotlina archaeological site, where pottery fragments and dark, ash-mixed soil were recorded on a hilltop. County road Ž4037 links Kotlina with Podolje and Kneževi Vinogradi, making the village a natural stop on a drive through northern Baranja’s wine country. A local branch school teaches in Hungarian, while the Petefi Šandor cultural society reflects the Hungarian traditions that remain visible in village life.
Kotlina stands apart from flatter parts of Baranja through its setting in a hollow enclosed by vineyards, with three smaller valleys beginning at the village’s western edge. Its visual focus is not a square but the elevated Reformed Christian church complex, approached by brick-paved steps. The single-nave church is about 30 metres long and is accompanied by an 1853 parsonage and an agricultural building dated 1867. Kotlina’s Hungarian cultural character is also expressed through the Petefi Šandor cultural society and the village branch school, where classes are taught in Hungarian.

Things to do
Begin in Glavna Street at the protected Reformed Christian church complex, where the brick-paved approach reveals how prominently the ensemble sits above the village. From outside, examine the façade tower, the 1853 parsonage and the agricultural building marked with the year 1867. Continue on foot towards Kotlina’s western end, where the vineyard valley separates into three smaller folds. Treat the recorded Kotlina archaeological area as a protected site and leave any surface material undisturbed. Finish by driving towards Podolje along the road identified by the municipality as part of the area’s wine-tourism development.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Kotlina has two principal road approaches: from Kneževi Vinogradi in the east or from Podolje in the west. County road Ž4037 links Podolje, Kotlina and Kneževi Vinogradi with the D212 state road. The rebuilt Kotlina–Podolje section created a more direct passage through the Baranja wine hills, so drivers approaching the village do not have to come exclusively through the municipal centre. Within Kotlina, Glavna Street is the main reference point, with Doža Đerđa, Petefi Šandora and Planina streets branching away from it. The municipal spatial plan envisaged bus-stop improvements but provides no current passenger timetable, making a car or bicycle the dependable choice for combining Kotlina, its vineyards and neighbouring Podolje.
