Drežnik Castle is a medieval fortress in the Drežnik Grad area, close to Plitvice Lakes and the Korana River. It was the centre of the medieval Croatian county of the same name and passed through the hands of the Nelipić, Güssing, Babonić and Frankopan families. The Ottomans finally took it in 1592; after its liberation in the late 18th century, the fortress was rebuilt and served as a Military Frontier stronghold until 1869. Its surviving defensive fabric reflects its borderland role in the Kordun region. Croatia’s Ministry of Culture lists Stari grad Drežnik among sites for which the Municipality of Rakovica has undertaken conservation work. It suits an itinerary through Kordun and Plitvice.
