Grobnik Castle rises above the village of Grobnik, around ten kilometres northeast of Rijeka. The fortified town visible today was largely shaped between the 15th and 17th centuries, although the site’s history reaches much further back: Grobnik is mentioned in the Vinodol Statute of 1288. The complex has a triangular plan, enclosed by walls, towers, half-towers and an additional defensive belt. Its courtyard contains a Gothic well bearing the coats of arms of the Frankopans and Gusić family, while the southwest tower holds St Helen’s Chapel with a Renaissance portal. Once the guardian of the Grobnik area, the castle now hosts a local museum, gallery and cultural events.
