Pazin Cave is a major karst sinkhole formed where the impermeable flysch of the Pazinčica catchment meets the permeable limestone of south-western Istria. The Pazinčica disappears underground here and continues towards the Raša valley. Beyond the broad entrance lies a large chamber with Martel Lake, connected by a siphon to Mitrovo Lake. Pazin Castle stands on the cliff above, creating one of Istria’s most striking juxtapositions of natural and cultural heritage. The site is legally protected and is not designed for mass visitation. The Istra Speleological Society in Pazin runs guided visits with Natura Histrica, subject to weather conditions.
