Kornati National Park covers most of the Lower Kornati, an archipelago in Croatia’s Adriatic, and was declared a national park in 1980. It extends across about 217 square kilometres and includes 89 islands, islets and reefs; roughly three quarters of its area is sea. The archipelago’s open-sea side is marked by very steep cliffs, known as crowns, while the land consists of limestone and dolomite with sparse eu-Mediterranean vegetation. There are no springs or permanent watercourses on the islands, contributing to their distinctly bare character. Kornati is explored by sea, and the park authority advises visitors to familiarise themselves with its conduct rules and protection regime before visiting.
