St Anthony’s Church in Sućuraj dates from 1663 and is among the town’s oldest surviving sacred buildings. It was built by mainland settlers led by Franciscans from Zaostrog, who fled Ottoman incursions in the 16th and 17th centuries and settled in the Donja Banda quarter. This is a Baroque church, offering a clear contrast with the later, 19th-century parish church of St George. Its importance is not merely architectural: it speaks directly to Sućuraj’s recovery after wartime devastation and to the town’s ties with Franciscans from the Makarska littoral. It stands in the old part of the settlement and fits naturally into a walking route that also takes in Fortica, the monastery and St George’s Church.
