Often simply called Grad by local people, Sinj Fortress occupies a hill above the town, overlooking Sinj and the Cetina plain. It sheltered civilians and soldiers during Ottoman incursions, and its church once kept the image of Our Lady of Mercy, later associated with the Shrine of Our Lady of Sinj. Only fragments of the fortifications remain after destruction and eighteenth-century earthquakes. The small church now standing at the summit was built in 1887. The approach is lined with fourteen Stations of the Cross created by Croatian artists. It is a rewarding stop for visitors seeking a viewpoint alongside traces of the fortress and Sinj’s enduring religious tradition.
