St. John the Baptist Church

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist lies in the historic centre of Postira on Brač’s northern coast. The present church was built in the 16th century, while archaeological work beside and beneath it uncovered an early Christian religious complex dating from the 6th century. The finds include basilica remains and an early Christian baptistery; research also records a three-nave basilica with a semicircular apse east of the parish church. The site is therefore more than a parish church: it brings two periods of sacred architecture into direct contact. It is best seen while walking through central Postira, bearing in mind that the church remains an active place of worship.
