Žumberak is a sparsely populated highland district along the Slovenian border, distinguished by tiny villages scattered among woodland, meadows, vineyards and karst hollows. Much of its visitor appeal is tied to Žumberak–Samoborsko Gorje Nature Park, whose roughly 350 kilometres of marked hiking paths link Sošice, Budinjak, Sveta Gera, the Slapnica valley and other remote sites. Sošice has a visitor centre and trailheads for Sopot waterfall, Sekulići and Sveta Gera. Karst covers about 90 percent of the park, with more than 137 explored caves and pits as well as an unusually dense network of springs. Timber houses and small Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches reflect the history of the Žumberak Uskoks. Budinjak reveals a much older landscape: its Trail of Princes passes prehistoric burial mounds and archaeological sites. Žumberak works best as a full-day journey combining driving and walking rather than a quick stop in a single centre, with Sošice and Budinjak serving as the most practical starting points.
Žumberak has no single compact visitor hub; its character comes from a network of small settlements including Sošice, Budinjak, Kalje, Kostanjevac and Stari Grad Žumberački. Limestone has shaped sinkholes, swallow holes, short sinking streams and hundreds of springs, while the deeply cut Slapnica valley stands out for its tufa formations and waterfalls. The legacy of the Žumberak Uskoks survives in the close presence of Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic religious sites. In Sošice, this heritage is interpreted through the nature park visitor centre and the two themed branches of the Sinko Janko trail. Žumberak is therefore best understood as a collection of distant villages and natural sites connected by narrow local roads, rather than as one pin on a map.

Begin at the Sošice Visitor Centre, then choose one branch of the Sinko Janko trail, focusing either on nature or on everyday life in historic Žumberak. From Sošice, a marked route leads towards the roughly 40-metre Sopot waterfall, while stronger hikers can continue through Sekulići towards Sveta Gera. For the second half of the day, drive to Budinjak and follow the Trail of Princes, where prehistoric burial mounds share the landscape with conspicuous karst features. The park’s wider trail network includes Sošice–Vodice, Brisalo–Kalje and Vranjački Slap–Tihočaj routes. Because Žumberak’s trailheads lie far apart, combining Sošice and Budinjak makes a realistic day out; attempting to cover the entire highland in one visit does not.
A car is the most practical way to travel between Sošice, Budinjak, Kalje and Žumberak’s other scattered villages, as bus departures are limited. The municipality lists Samoborček route 512 from Jastrebarsko via Pribić and Kostanjevac to Sošice, while noting that its timetable may change seasonally. Road access is generally from Jastrebarsko and Krašić towards Kostanjevac and Sošice, with local park roads continuing towards Budinjak and Kalje. Žumberak has no railway station, so rail passengers must transfer to road transport at Jastrebarsko. Hikers should select a circular route or arrange collection in advance because several marked paths finish in a different, distant village.
The marked approach starts in the Sošice area, and the park’s official trail list includes the Sopot Waterfall–Pliješ section.
The visitor centre is at Sošice 25B and serves as the base for the park’s local interpretation programmes.
