Vučedol lies a few kilometres downstream from Vukovar on a high bank above the Danube. The site was occupied across many periods, from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, but its most important layer belongs to the Eneolithic Vučedol culture of the late 4th and 3rd millennia BC. Robert Rudolf Schmidt’s 1938 excavations produced major finds including the famous ceramic bird and the so-called Copper Founder’s Megaron, while systematic research has continued since the 1980s. Today the archaeological site is best visited together with the Museum of Vučedol Culture, whose modern exhibition explains settlement, metallurgy, pottery, beliefs and everyday life in the prehistoric community.
