The Franciscan Church of Saints Philip and James is one of Vukovar’s most important religious monuments. Construction began in 1723, and the complex was enlarged further in the 19th century. Its long nave, monastery and prominent bell tower form a strong silhouette above the Danube and the town centre. The complex was severely damaged during the 1991 war and subsequently underwent a long restoration. Today, visitors can experience not only the church but also monastic spaces and museum interpretation connected with the Franciscan heritage. The site is reached by a short uphill walk from central Vukovar, and its elevated position also provides attractive views toward the town and river.
