The Church of St John Capistran and its Franciscan monastery are a key part of Ilok’s historic core. Nicholas of Ilok restored and enlarged the 14th-century church and monastery, while St John Capistran died and was buried in the town. The monastic complex was extended and renewed between the 14th and 20th centuries; its last major stylistic remodelling was led by Hermann Bollé in a Neo-Gothic manner. The monastery tower offers views over the surroundings. The site is especially meaningful to pilgrims and to visitors exploring Ilok’s medieval sacred heritage.
