About this place

Suhopolje grew on the Slavonian plain around the Janković estate, whose owners shaped both the settlement and its most distinctive architectural ensemble. At its centre is Janković Castle, developed between the mid-18th and early 20th centuries and restored as a visitor centre with multimedia displays and a 5D cinema. Beyond the façade stretches a sizeable landscaped park, recorded on an 1862 cadastral map and associated with work commissioned by Stjepan Janković in the 1820s. The nearby parish church of St Teresa of Ávila completes the historic core and reflects the same family’s influence on Suhopolje. The castle now combines interpretation with accommodation and has hosted concerts, theatre performances and wine evenings; it recorded 6,594 overnight stays in 2024. Because the castle, park and church occupy the compact centre, visitors can understand Suhopolje’s identity largely on foot. The village also works as a quiet base for reaching Virovitica, the wooded slopes of Bilogora and the western approaches to Papuk.

Suhopolje is defined by Janković Castle on Vukovarska Street, where the history of an estate now meets a contemporary visitor experience. A masonry inn with a vaulted cellar already stood on the estate in 1765, and the estate administration moved to present-day Suhopolje five years later. The Janković family acquired the estate in the late 18th century and gradually transformed it from a working property into a residential complex with a park. The castle is protected built heritage, while its surrounding park is protected landscape architecture. Since May 2021, the restored complex has operated as a visitor centre.

Things to see

Janković Castle is Suhopolje’s principal landmark. It was built in the mid-18th century and acquired its present appearance in the early 20th century. Restored as a visitor centre, it presents the Janković family and the attractions of Virovitica-Podravina County through interactive interpretation. The complex includes multimedia displays, a souvenir shop, accommodation and a 5D cinema, surrounded by a protected historic park. Another key piece of the estate story is the Church of St Teresa of Ávila, built by Ivan Nepomuk Janković de Pribert between 1807 and 1816 and dedicated to his wife Teresa. A visit therefore reveals both the former manor estate and its modern reuse.

Things to do

Begin at the Janković Castle Visitor Centre, where multimedia interpretation and a 5D cinema introduce the history of the Suhopolje estate. Continue into the park along its accessible path, crossing grounds whose early-19th-century design is associated with Stjepan Janković. Loop back towards the historic core and the Church of St Teresa of Ávila, another landmark connected with the family that built the castle complex. Overnight visitors should also check the castle programme: its 2024 calendar included concerts, theatre performances and wine evenings, adding a contemporary cultural layer to the historic setting.

Food and drink

Restaurant Park is the clearest choice for a conventional meal in Suhopolje itself, and its grounds have also hosted Suhopoljski kotlić, a competition devoted to venison paprika stew. Restaurant Papuk operates within the Janković Castle Visitor Centre, making lunch easy to combine with a tour of the restored manor complex. The local food story also includes honey and other bee products from OPG Apis, a family enterprise with four generations of beekeeping behind it. Suhopolje’s sweet side comes into focus during Walnut Days and its orehnjača competition, while Grofovsko Martinje has brought wines from Podravina and Slavonia into the castle cellar.

Practical information

Practical information

Visitor information is provided by the Suhopolje Municipality Tourist Board, based at 10 Svete Terezije Street. The Janković Castle Visitor Centre occupies the village centre, and its interior, grounds and first-floor facilities are adapted for visitors with disabilities through features including ramps and a lift. The accommodation area includes an adapted room and bathroom, while the restaurant can address specific dietary needs. The route through the castle park has no steps or comparable obstacles, creating an accessible circuit around Suhopolje’s main visitor attraction.

Getting there and around

Suhopolje sits on the D2 Podravina road between Virovitica and Slatina, with the D34 branching here towards Daruvar and Donji Miholjac. Suhopolje railway station is on the regional Varaždin–Koprivnica–Virovitica–Osijek–Dalj line. HŽPP’s timetable valid from 13 April to 12 December 2026 lists direct regional departures to Virovitica and services running the other way through Pčelić and Daruvar, although some operate only on selected days. When engineering work requires rail-replacement buses, HŽPP uses the area in front of Suhopolje station building as the boarding point, so disruption notices are worth checking immediately before travel.
