About
Jazovka is a 49-metre-deep vertical karst pit in woodland near Sošice in the Žumberak Mountains. The site is associated with killings and the disposal of victims in the pit during 1943 and after the end of the Second World War in 1945. In 2020, Croatia’s Ministry of Croatian Veterans carried out speleological work and an exhumation, recovering the remains of at least 814 people. The remains were buried near Sošice in 2025. Jazovka is visited as a quiet place of historical remembrance, where the memorial and the victims call for a respectful approach.
