About
Veternica Cave lies on the southwestern side of Medvednica, near Zagreb, within Medvednica Nature Park. Its known passages extend for about 7.1 kilometres, placing it among Croatia’s longest caves. The mountain’s carbonate rocks enabled its formation, and the underground system is also one of the country’s important palaeontological sites. Veternica is protected as a geomorphological natural monument and provides bat habitat, so visits are managed with conservation in mind. Entry is not permitted without a guide authorised by the park’s public institution. With its underground atmosphere, geological formations, and archaeological and palaeontological value, it is an especially compelling Medvednica visit for families and curious explorers.
