Zadvarje Fortress overlooks an important historic route linking the Biokovo foothills with the hinterland. Its medieval name, Duare—meaning gate or passage—aptly describes its strategic position; the site appears in sources in 1408. From the 1440s it was held by Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, and the fortress was completed before 1482, when the Poljica Statute recorded it as a town. Its triangular plan is flanked by two round towers, while the enclosure once held accommodation for the garrison, a chapel, cisterns and storage rooms. The north-west tower, with its battered base, is a rare inland Dalmatian example of fortification adapted to artillery warfare.
