Martinis Marchi Castle was built in 1708 by the noble Marchi family, after the Venetian Republic granted permission in 1703 to establish a defensive tower, village and church above Maslinica Bay. Conceived as a military stronghold, it has an inner courtyard and a prominent four-storey tower; surviving defensive features include cannon openings, gun loops and machicolations. Its purpose was to protect western Šolta from pirate attacks. The castle is a registered cultural asset, Z-4771, and has now been adapted as a heritage hotel. The best way to appreciate its exterior is from the waterfront promenade along Maslinica harbour.
