The Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding opened in 2015 in two old stone houses once belonging to a local shipwright. Its exhibition interprets the craft of building the Betina gajeta, a protected item of intangible cultural heritage, and the everyday world in which wooden boats were used for fishing, transport and journeys to olive groves and vineyards. Shipbuilding tools, models, craftspeople’s stories and the technical properties of timber are presented alongside multimedia displays that make the building process accessible to younger visitors. The museum extends into Betina harbour, where an open-air floating display places gajetas, leuts and other traditional boats in their original maritime setting.
