The National Museum of Modern Art is the direct successor of Zagreb's Modern Gallery, whose beginnings are linked to the first acquisitions of contemporary Croatian artists in the early twentieth century. Its scope follows painting, sculpture and related disciplines from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, with holdings exceeding twelve thousand works. Since 1934 its historic home has been the Vranyczany-Dobrinović Palace beside Zrinjevac, an 1883 Historicist building designed by Otto Hofer. The collection is central to understanding Croatian modern art, from academic traditions to avant-garde and post-war movements. Check the museum's current exhibition locations before visiting, as programmes in recent years have been adapted to restoration work affecting Zagreb's museum buildings.
