Rupnica is a geological site in Papuk Nature Park, around two kilometres from Voćin. This abandoned quarry exposes regular four-sided columns of albite rhyolite, an igneous rock whose prismatic jointing is unique in Croatia. It was protected in 1948 as Croatia’s first geological natural monument. A 300-metre educational trail passes the volcanic rock exposures and explains their formation; allow about 45 minutes for the visit. Rupnica is particularly engaging for families, school groups, and anyone wanting a close view of the evidence of Papuk’s ancient volcanic activity.
