About
The cathedral church of St Nicholas in Vukovar was built between 1733 and 1737 on the site of an earlier wooden church. It belongs to the provincial folk-Baroque tradition, and its interior is defined by an iconostasis reconstructed from the historic eighteenth-century sanctuary screen. The church was badly damaged in 1991, subsequently underwent structural restoration, and received its new iconostasis after years of work. In the historic town centre, it is an important sacred and cultural monument of Vukovar’s Serbian Orthodox community. A visit offers an encounter with Baroque heritage and the city’s layered history.
