Church of St. Nicholas

church in Mikluševci, Croatia

About

St Nicholas Church in Mikluševci is a Baroque Orthodox church built between 1758 and 1766 on the site of an earlier wooden church dedicated to the same saint. The Joint Council of Municipalities records construction in either 1758 or 1762 and notes that its altar table is made of red stone. A principal feature of its interior was the iconostasis by Lazar Serdanović, a painter associated with Serbian Baroque art; the work has also been examined in a Matica srpska publication. The church forms part of the village’s Orthodox sacred heritage, while Pannonian Rusyn Greek Catholics also settled here during the 19th century. A visit fits naturally into an exploration of Mikluševci and nearby eastern Slavonian villages.
