About
The complex was commissioned by Zagreb bishop Luka Baretin, as recorded by the year 1508 carved into the Renaissance coat of arms above the main portal. The substantial Gothic church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, and finely carved corbels survive in its sanctuary. During the wars with the Ottomans, the buildings suffered repeatedly; after the Franciscans left, the monastery also served as a defensive stronghold. A major fire in 1572 caused further damage. Franciscans returned in the 17th century and restored the monastery. The associated Franciscan pharmacy, documented from 1670, adds another important layer to the site’s history.
