St. Nicholas Church in Jastrebarsko

church in Croatia

About

St. Nicholas’s Church stands on a natural rise in Jastrebarsko’s historic centre, on the site of a parish first recorded in King Béla IV’s 1257 charter. The present building was erected between 1772 and 1775, while its masonry bell tower dates from 1757. Although the church was substantially remodelled in the 19th century, it retains the character of Baroque architecture together with a Late Historicist interior furnishing. A chapel of St Peter, built beside the sanctuary in 1561 as the burial place of Petar Erdődy, once stood here; its role was transferred to the sacristy during construction of the present church. Look for Erdődy’s tombstone and the restored tower rising above the town.
