Church of Pentecost

The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit stands in the centre of Markušica on the site of an earlier wooden church recorded in the early 18th century. The present monumental, single-nave building was erected from 1794 to 1810 in a Neoclassical idiom. Its elongated interior ends in a semicircular apse, while the west front is dominated by a square-plan, Baroque-shaped bell tower. The iconostasis includes paintings attributed to the Dalj artist Jovan Isailović the Elder, made in 1777 for the previous church; the frescoes date from 1989. Restored after wartime damage between 1999 and 2002, it merits attention for its balanced late-Baroque and Neoclassical features.
