About
Erdut Castle survives as a medieval fortification on a rise above the Danube, with views across the river and the Bačka plain. Erdut appears in written sources in 1359, while a substantial fort with high walls and a large square keep is recorded in 1499. Its position controlled the Danube waterway; after the Ottoman conquest in 1526, it remained under Ottoman rule until 1687. Two towers and fragments of wall are preserved from the former town: a three-storey round tower with a terrace, loopholes and brick buttresses, and a square tower built on older foundations. The square tower was altered into a family mausoleum in the late 19th century. It is an especially rewarding stop for visitors interested in fortifications and Danube landscapes.
