The Benedictine convent of St Euphemia was founded in 1069 beside the northern wall of Diocletian's Palace. The complex changed over many centuries and was badly damaged, but archaeological remains of the pre-Romanesque church, the Chapel of Blessed Arnir and a bell tower survive. Giorgio da Sebenico worked on the chapel in the 15th century; the original altar and sarcophagus of Arnir are now in Kaštel Lukšić, with a cast displayed at the site. Only steps from the Golden Gate, the remains are easy to overlook. They reward a pause because they bring together Benedictine history, medieval sculpture and the city's expansion beyond the Roman walls.
