Ad Basilicas Pictas lies north of Diocletian's Palace on a site preserving evidence from antiquity through the Middle Ages. Excavations revealed monumental Roman architecture and two early-Christian churches from the 5th and 6th centuries, once decorated with multicoloured mosaics and marble. One included a baptistery, while historical sources also connect the area with St Andrew's Church, where an important church council was held in 1185. The archaeological site is protected cultural heritage. It is particularly rewarding for visitors interested in archaeology who want to understand Split beyond the palace walls and the long continuity of settlement along the route toward ancient Salona.
