Brod Fortress was built beside the Sava as a Habsburg border stronghold facing the Ottoman Empire; Prince Eugene of Savoy approved its construction, which lasted from 1715 to 1780. The flat terrain dictated its regular star-shaped defensive layout: a square core is formed by bastions and defensive ditches, and the fortress once had three lines of defence. At full extent, the complex covered about 33 hectares and was intended to house around 4,000 soldiers and 150 cannons. After its military role ended, the fortress gradually acquired urban functions. Restored buildings now accommodate the Ružić Gallery, a music school, a classical grammar school and the tourist information centre.
